I am an associate professor at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism where I teach a range of classes, including basic reporting and writing, bilingual reporting and storytelling (Spanish), global journalism, magazine and feature writing, personal narrative. I also develop and teach cultural competency/cross-cultural communications workshops/classes. Also: Founder and Director of Medill's Journalism Residency Program in Argentina; Co-Chair of Medill Diversity Committee; Affiliate Faculty in Asian American Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Buffett Institute; Former Director for Medill's global programs; Advisor for Asian American Student Journalists and the Medill National Association of Hispanic Journalists chapter; Attended Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy; Completed Freedom Forum Institute's Power Shift Project training.

I am also
a freelance journalist and writer and have written for various publications, ranging from the National Geographic Traveler and Marie Claire to the Miami Herald and the Boston Globe. I worked as a reporter with the Detroit Free Press, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and in the Cox Newspapers Washington bureau.

I am a recipient of the National Headliner Best in Show, ICIJ Award for Outstanding International Investigative Reporting as well as several other investigative and enterprise journalism awards.
